4 Important Skills Managers Should Learn

 

A car can't move without a driver, it's safe to say a company can't move/succeed without a manager. Because behind every successful company, there's a skilled manager. It doesn't matter if it's one individual or a group of leaders (managers), their function and skills are important for the company to move. 

Who's a manager? I can say a manager is someone in charge of leading a group of people or monitoring tasks within a company or organization. I can also say a manager is the person who makes sure things get done the right way and on time by coordinating people and resources.

If you want to climb the ladder of success as a manager, you'll need to learn and master a set of skills. With these 4 skills, you're good to go:

(1) Leadership and Communication Skills: Great management needs leadership skills, and great leadership needs management skills. You need to be a leader for you to be able to manage people and resources. And what does a leader do? A leader motivates employees, builds strong trust, and brings up talented people, which will lead to a more successful team.

Just as leadership skills are important, communication skills are also important for management. Without smooth communication, a team will fall like a palm tree. Even studies show that clear communication is key to a well-organized workspace. 

Picture communication as a map that helps managers find their way. It helps them make clear decisions, build better relationships with their employees, and even help them in terms of leadership. 

(2) Decision-Making and Problem-Solving Skills: Decision-making is beyond just an ordinary skill that a manager should have, it's a skill that drives company or organization performance. More than 750 companies by management and consulting firm Bain conducted a survey and found a 95% correlation between effectiveness and financial results. Also, the data showed that companies that succeed at making clear decisions return nearly 6% higher than those of their competitors.

Yes, decision-making skills are extremely important for a manager. But if a manager combines it with a problem-solving skill, it's a game-changer. Managers must also be able to solve problems, it's part of their responsibilities. Because running a company or organization evolves around solving problems. 

(3) Time Management: Without too much explanation, you should already know by now that time management skills are not just for managers, every individual must learn how to manage time. But why should managers take it seriously? Time management plays a perfect role in increasing the productivity and efficiency of a manager, and also helps in making decision-making and work-life balance better. 

(4) Coaching and Mentorship Skills: Managers should automatically consider themselves as coaches and mentors - because they're. 

Let's take football coaches as an example. Football coaches help their players improve their skills. They help their players achieve specific goals, develop different techniques, and improve their performance. And of course, they give feedback, correct mistakes, and guide to help their players achieve their best in a particular game or season. The same thing applies to a manager. 

Mentorship on the other hand. A manager should learn a mentorship skill because mentors offer wisdom, advice, and support to their employees. Managers should be able to share their own experiences to help their employees grow both personally and professionally.

You see, being a manager is amazing and at the same time, it's frustrating. And the truth is you can't outsource the frustrating part of it, you just have to face it.

I'm 100% sure you'd love to take your company or organization to a greater height as a manager. Not bad. But to do that successfully you need to learn and master those 4 skills listed above.
